[FONT='Times New Roman']I have a 587.15253402 kenmore dishwasher that does not clean dishes on the top rack very well. It also leaves detergent on glasses on the top rack sometimes. This unit has a top spray arm that hangs off the bottom of the upper rack.

I have been doing some testing by listening to it as it goes through various cycles and opening the door to see if the top and bottom spray arms are spinning and from what I can tell the top arm almost never runs. The bottom one runs all the time, but the top one has only run once that I know of.

I have checked that the top and bottom spray arms spin completely freely and they do not appear to be blocked. When the unit is running and I open the door very quickly I don't see water coming down from the hole in the top of the unit either.

I have taken out the plastic screens in the bottom of the unit and removed the plastic cover (with three torx screws) that covers the impeller and I have checked the round ball valve in there to make sure it moves freely.

Can someone explain how this unit is supposed to function? Do the top and bottom spray arms run at the same time? I am assuming they do not as I am guessing that ball valve is designed to divert flow to one or the other individually. What I don't understand is how the ball is moved to block one or the other tube?

If anyone can explain how this unit is supposed to operate or give me any information on how I might troubleshoot the top spray arm I would very much appreciate it!

Thanks!

Your unit is actually a Frigidaire.

Here is the tech sheet
http://manuals.frigidaire.com/prodinfo_pdf/Kinston/154563701.pdf

This should help you troubleshoot it. Not sure if it is an exact match but it should be close enough for your problem.
