My kenmore ice maker quite working. The red eye works and the water dispencer works. Where do I go next?

I had this prob about 2 yrs ago. Repairman said it is the actual ice maker itself. Bad design and he has replaced many. He had one with him and replaced it. $250 total. parts and labor...But I watched him and I could have done it myself. He said the parts were approx. $85....
