I ordered a new lint screen from APP and lint is bypassing the new screen, but not before. I suspect that the new lint screen is made different than the original.

I believe the new lint screen lacks a brush that lined the edge of the screen and helped it seat in the lint screen housing. I threw out the old lint screen, so I can't tell for sure. I think the brush was replaced with a solid plastic section of the new lint screen - obviously there's something wrong with the new lint screen since the old one worked fine.

Looking for any ideas on whether these after market parts are made differently that the original?

We are not associated with the parts operations of APP (we are volunteers) by it does not appear the Maytag has issued any tech bulletins on any change.

I would call APP (they are pretty good folks) and explain the situation and see if they sent you the wrong screen or if the screens indeed have changed.

It is important that the lint screeen be sealed against the frame, so don't let them off the hook until you are satisfied. I am sure they will take care of you.
