I have a 10 year old Amana side by side that all of a sudden stopped getting cold. Yesterday we kept hearing a high pitched buzzing sound that would start and stop during the day. Last night we noticed items in the freezer were soft but the refrigerator seemed ok. We also noticed the freezer setting was on 2 so we turned it up to 5. This morning both the freezer and refrigerator were warm. I removed the back bottom panel and the condenser fan is running. Is there any troubleshooting I can do to determine if this is a compressor issue or some other issue or perhaps just time for a new refrigerator?

Thanks in advance for your help.

After further investigation it appears that both compressor and freezer fans run ok and that the buzzing sound is coming from the relays on the side of the compressor. I pulled the PTC relay and overload switch off the side of the compressor but I could not determine if there is a way to actually test them to determine if one was bad. I put everything back together and restarted the refrigerator to see if I was able to get it to work again. Is there a way to determine if these componets are good or bad without just replacing them since the PTC Relay costs $50 and the Overload switch costs $70?

The only way how to check the PTC is to measure the resistance across the terminals 2 & 3. The normal reading suppose to be 4-6 Ohms. Many times it's not enough for proper diagnosis.

Even if the reading is good, I would replace the PTC and overload. Especially if you are sure the compressor is fine. You can order them from Appliance Parts Pros for: PTC - $11.00 and overload - $63.90.

- The PTC Part number: AP4000197
