Our drier is no longer heating. It runs, and the exhaust coming out is cold. The drier also didn't turn off last night, it just kept running. I found it this morning still running. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Was it set to timed dry or permanent press?

Remove the plug (#12 on this diagram), set the dryer to timed dry (any time period, 45 min. for example) and look thru the hole behind the plug. Give it about 10-20 seconds. I know it's dark in there. All we need to find out is whether you see the igniter glowing. If it is, then what you probably need is a new set of coils. If not, check the flame sensor for continuity with an ohmmeter.

- Replacement set of dryer coils
- Inexpensive multimeter
- Step by step instructions on how to get to the coils (these are meant for another part, but they really show in detail how to take the dryer apart to get to the coils for your model)
- Flame sensor, if you need one

Hope this helps. Keep us posted.

Admin,
I followed your diagnosis and do not see the ingniter glowing. Can the igniter itself be bad? Also, I don't see the flame sensor listed on the parts list on the Sears website. Do you have more details on how to distinguish between a failed igniter or a failed flame sensor and how to replace the flame sensor?

Thanks.
Rich

Hi Rich,

In order to provide most accurate advise we need the complete model number of the dryer.

Gene.

Gene,
I have the same model number and problem as jspinnelli - Kenmore : 97374210 73742. I do have the dryer apart and would like to understand what part the flame sensor is and how to test it. Or, how would I confirm that the igniter is bad?

By the way, I pulled the ignitor and put a voltmeter in the jack. When turned on, the meter read 0VAC. Can I now assume that a thermal fuse is bad?

Thanks.
Rich
