My dryer keeps shutting off during the cycle. I have replaced the thermostat near the motor and also the one that controls the light. There is one more to replace, but I am reluctant to spend any more money and have it not work. It runs sometimes for 10 minutes, and other times it completes the cycle. I have cleaned out all the lint and checked to see that the air vent is not clogged. It seems like it is a temperature control problem. I took it apart, drum and all, and don't see anything suspect.

[COLOR="Blue"] It seems like it is a temperature control problem. I took it apart, drum and all, and don't see anything suspect.[/COLOR] I am assuming that you cleaned the motor and also cleaned/checked the blower wheel. Can you restart it right away or do you have to wait several minutes before it will restart? Do you have to do anything else to get it to start re: open/close the door etc.? If you have to wait it is usually the motor that is overheating and tripping it's internal thermal protect. Try rotating the drum in the correct direction by hand, should rotate fairly easily. You may want to try this on a couple other driers, just to get a feel for it. Could be the drum is overloading the motor. Often it is just the motor is getting close to the end of it's lifetime. |

My dryer kept shutting off during the cycle. I suspected the thermostat but was afraid to buy anymore parts. Now, the drum turns, the heater coil is intact, but no heat. Is this an indication that the thermostat near the heat element is bad? Could this be why my dryer kept shutting off?

Do not know what video you watched but to measure for continuity.
Put the meter to ohms/resistance.
Then short the meter leads together the meter should move to 0 ohms.
A couple things to watch when measuring ohms and continuity
1. Always remove power from the machine otherwise you could blow your meter.
2. Always disconnect at least one side of any device you are checking. This eliminates the possibility of measuring an alternate/parallel circuit path.
3. When checking for closed contacts and continuity use the lowest scale (Usually 200 ohms). Then try higher scales. This scale is 0 to 200 ohms so if the device you are measuring is 300 ohms this scale would show an open circuit which it is not, you are just measuring outside the scale's dynamic range.
There is a good STICKY at the start of this forum about it's use.
Note a thermostat will not cause the motor to shut off, all they control is the heating coil. |

what would cause the motor to keep starting and stopping? It has been going on for months. Is the motor dying?

Is the motor dying?
Yes; it could be.
Try turning the drum in the correct direction, it should turn fairly easily.
If not perhaps the drum is dragging and putting too much load on the motor.
You may want to try this on a couple other dryers just to get a feel for it.
Also check that the motor is free of dust/lint. Could be it is clogged solid with lint and is not cooling properly. |

I decided to try something new. I put the clothes in the dryer and it shut off after about 5 - 7 minutes. I waited a while and put them in on "air fluff" only. It didn't shut off after 20 minutes. I then put the temperature on "delicate" and it did not shut off after about 20 minutes. I then turned the temperature dial to "regular" heat, and it shut off in about 5 minutes. What does this tell you?
I just can't let it go. This dryer will not win.
