I'm a bit new at this but being between jobs I must at least try to repair this myself.

My dryer stopped running one day. The element comes on but when I push the button the motor does not turn. I am not sure exactly where to start. I have some electro-mechanical background in copiers so do know some of the basics.

I know I am asking a lot but if there is someone that would not mind taking on a little project and trying to talk me through this repair I would greatly appreciate it.

I will look for a manual so I can follow along more easily. The button seems to stick in a little when I push it so will start there and will check the door switch next. Start with the simpler things... Beyond that though I will be a little over my head.

I will be getting a meter today to check continuity on these switches and will update my post after that.

Thank you!

This is the big clue
It sounds like the centrifugal switches on the motor are being activated when the motor is at rest.
The motor has two centrifugal switches which are activated by a mechanical assembly when the motor gets close to operating speed.
One of them connects in the heating coil. This prevents the coil from heating without air circulation. Your coil runs without the motor running so the switch is either activated or you have a grounded element.
The other, switches out the motor's start winding, if it is left on when the motor is running the motor will overheat. So if activated at rest your start winding is not helping start the motor.

Could be that the motor is just clogged solid with lint.
May also be that the centrifugal mechanism is broken in which case you will have to replace the motor.
