I turned off and defrosted my upright freezer (manual defrost). Now it won't cool any colder than 35-40 degrees. It comes on and runs, but always stops cooling at 40 or so.

It seems like a simple fix, or is it a major problem? What have I done? I should have left the ice in there!! :( Can someone help?

Thanks,
Dianna

I doubt you broke it besides once the coils are covered in ice you have to do a defrost.
I am assuming that you did not get in there and start chipping the ice out which can cause serious damage.

When it reaches the 40 degrees does the unit start to cycle the compressor normally?
If the compressor never shuts off then you could have a very serious problem.

Could it be that you moved the end of the thermostat's capillary tube while defrosting as this is what detects the temperature.

You may want to try rotating the temperatures dial back and forth half a dozen times, could be it is just acting up.

Personally I never move the thermostat, when defrosting I unplug the unit.
