smoke was coming out of the back of my refrigerator and now it won't cool anything. What could be wrong and is it worth reparing or should I just go buy a new refrigerator. It's only 6 years old.

First you have to find out what smoked. That should not be too hard as it should have left evidence.
If it is the compressor start device there is no use replacing it till you check that the compressor windings are OK
