I have a Kenmore gas dryer which has worked fine for many years. Recently it stopped drying. I removed the front panel and observed the burner. From a cold start it works fine - igniter glows, gas fires and runs for a few minutes. When gas cuts off the first time it will not restart - igniter glows then stops but no gas - this repeats every few minutes. Is this somehow related to the different funtion of the two soleniods?

Yes it does relate to the coils (soleniods) The primary allows juice to the ignitor and the secondary allows gas to flow. Replace both.
