Our 16 cu ft upright freezer has worked reliably for 15 years and it suddenly stopped working. It was heavily iced and we unplugged, tossed all of the food, and completely defrosted it. After cleaning it up this morning I plugged it back in and it comes on for about 10 seconds and then goes off and stays off. I then unplug it. I have repeated this several times and the freezer responds in the same way each time. I either need to call a freezer repair person or replace it. Is there a reset switch, or fuse? Is there any thing else I can do before I call a repair person or purchase a new one?

Thank you!

"it comes on for 10 seconds" Is the compressor actually starting or just buzzing, clicking once, and then shutting down? If left plugged in will it try to start every 5-10 minutes? You also say it was "iced up". Is it a frost free freezer? I need more info to be helpful.

It is not a frost free model. I bypassed the temperature controller and it still just clicks and then buzzes for about 10 seconds and goes off for about 1 minute before repeating the cycle.

As fixtec mentioned earlier,
I would be curious as to whether the compressor is
actually starting and running for 10 seconds. Or whether
its trying to start and cant.

But from the description you gave its either a faulty
compressor relay or the compressor itself is bad.

There's nothing for me to add. Glen sounds like he knows his stuff.
