I have a water heater that the pilot light won't stay lit. Majority of the time as soon as I let go of the release red button it goes out. However there has been a couple times where it actually stayed on and got the water heater fully heated then the light went out again. From what I've read it sounds it could be a Thermocouple? Thanks,

Thermocouples are available at the large home improvement stores. Using a longer one is not a problem. Remove the old one, using a pencil eraser push it into the valve connector and twist it a couple times to clean it before putting the new connector in. As long as the hot end is in the flame and won't move it won't matter much how you made it adapt to the holding fixture.
