Have a refrig that keeps getting to cold. Checked everything out and am pretty sure I need to replace the cold control thermostat, but when looking at it, I'm not sure how to get the old one out and the new one in. Ccan anyone offer some advice or where I might get instructions before ordering the part (#AP3108492)...? Thanks

Since posting this request I wanted to add the following - When looking at the existing cold control, there seems to be a wire that is confusing, but in looking a the picture of the replacement part, it appears that may be a closed loop that might be the thermostat. Is this accurate? If so, it may solve part of my confusion. Also, in reading othrs posts, as I mentioned, I'm pretty sure it the cold control becuase the refirg never turns off, and if I rotate the defrost timer manually, the defrost heater does come on. SO any othr input would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Hi Longjack, In order to access the temperature control you have to remove a few screws holding the control box (#12 on the liner break down diagram). The wire which confused you is the sensing tube and when you'll replace the temperature control it is very important to put it exactly in the same position. If there is frost built up on the freezer back panel - possible the defrost timer is gone bad too. - The part number for the defrost timer is AP3110896 - The part number for the temperature control is AP3108492 Here are the break down diagrams for the Whirlpool refrigerator Model ET18NMXFW01Gene.

Gene, Thanks for the quick reponse, and bot to ask a stupid question, but I was able to get to the temp control, but was a little perplxed how it came out. Do those metal wings simply snap in and out of place on the plastic tabs? And one more questin came to mind....Out of curiuosity.... if a defrost timer is working correctly, how often should I hear the refrig stop running? \And does that always mean the defrost heater is on? Becuae as I mentioned, whenever I turn the defrost timer ot off using the screwdriver in order to stop the refrign from contantly running, the heater dow come on. (Perhaps I have the 2 processes - refrig stops running and defrost heater on) always related and really are not? Thanks again.

Let me explain you how it works.
The major difference between a defrost timer and a cold control is: a defrost timer works by the time while a cold control works by the temperature.
The defrost timer in your fridge switches between the cooling mode, when the power goes to the compressor (about 8 hours), and the defrost mode, when the power goes to the defrost heater (about 25 minutes).
When the defrost timer is in the cooling mode, the power to the compressor goes through the cold control which reads the temperature and depends on a settings opens or closes the circuit to the compressor. Another word, the compressor will run as long as it takes to build up the proper temperature and will stop at this point. If it runs nonstop and the temperature is way below normal then, most likely the cold control is bad.
When the defrost timer is in the defrost mode, the power goes to the defrost heater through the defrost thermostat which reads the temperature at the evaporator coil and closes the circuit (the defrost heater is hot) or opens the circuit (the defrost heater is cold). If there is frost covers the back panel in the freezer but the defrost heater goes "on" when you switch the defrost timer manually then, most likely the defrost timer is bad.
The cold control sensing tube snaps in and out on the tabs.
Gene.
