My Maytag Washer will fill with water but it will not agitate. It attempts to move albeit very slowly, and it is very loud. The agitator spins freely both clockwise and counterclockwise. I can manually put it to spin and it will spin and move into the rinse cycle, but once the water fills, the agitator will not work. I can manually put it into spin again and it will spin. Can you please help? I really would like to try to fix it.

The first time this happened a few days ago, the washer just stopped in the agitation cycle and there was an electrical/burnt smell. Since then, I have tried a few things, and once the washer is supposed to agitate, it shakes very slowly, and there is no more electrical/burnt smell. Again, everything else works the way it is supposed too, except for the agitation.
