with a freezer that has the evaporator coils sandwiched between the foam insulation and the metal skin would it be any more effecient if those same coils were exposed and mounted on the outside of the cabinet???

Thermal heat transfer is a function of delta T (thermal differential) Just compare the temperature of the exposed condensing coils and the side wall of the freezer. The exposed coils are a lot hotter. Plus thermally, the exposed coils have more natural air flow due to the open structure of the coils. At a room temperature of 70 degrees, these coils will go up to about 70 above ambient, or 140 degrees, pretty hot.

Thank you richappy. I did this. I removed the outer skin from a chest freezer, added 3" of foam then covered the box with FRP. I then mounted the coils outside the cabinet. This chest freezer to refrigerator conversion will be used in a very hot climate. So will with this heat transfer make my fridge "more effecient"? it will be solar powered. thanks again

Yes, it will be more efficient. Rate of heat transfer will be much greater.

To maintain inner temperature of 40 degrees, the condensing coils, at an outside temperature of 100, will go up to about 160-180 degrees.
