My Kenmore top freezer w/icemaker refrigerator has started making a repeated "popping noise" after it stops running. Not every time but when it starts doing it, it will do it after several cycles. This is a new noise and is fairly loud. It seems to be working ok at the moment but this is definately not normal and I am concerned a major problem is coming my way.

If it is kind of a clanking noise like a metal-to-metal sound it is most likely in the compressor. I have known refrigerators to do this for years; in fact mine has been doing it for 2 years now. I am not saying that it is a good thing or that it is normal just that it doesn’t necessary mean it is getting ready to break. Leveling the refrigerator may help. What is happing is the internal parts of the compressor are hitting the case of the compressor when powering down. If the sound is coming from the compressor don’t worry about it unless the noise is a problem for you. In which case you may consider a new one if leveling it doesn’t help.

I have also known fan motors to keep a noise when powering down. A loose fan blade normally causes this. Hope this helps!
