I think my refrigerator is dying!! Why? Well, this morning, got up, got the kids up, started making them breakfast and when I got the milk out of the refirgerator, it was not even cold. I opened the freezer (it's a side-by-side) and saw a long thick icicle from the shelf below the icemaker to the second to last shelf. I felt the ice in the ice bin and it's like it's defrosting or the freezer is not cold enough. The ice is not completely frozen. We turned the icemaker off the other day because the bin is full. It sounds as though the refrigerator is running. Maybe not as loud as before this problem started this morning.

We noticed that the freezer did the thing I mentioned above 2 times in the past about 2 weeks apart in a month and a half time. This happened while we were out of town for the weekend. At that time, it seemed that the refrigerator side was still cold.

Any advice on the problem would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

The first thing I would do is remove the cover on the back, check if the compressor and the fan next to it are running and clean the condenser coil.

Here are the break down diagrams for the Whirlpool refrigerator Model ED20TQXFW04

We checked the fan and the compressor. The fan was running but the compressor was not. We remembered that about 1 year ago we replaced the overload plug (part # AP3108472 from the diagram you provided). We removed it, put in back in place and the compressor started to run. The line from the compressor got cold and the compressor started getting hot for a while. About 1-2 minutes later the line was not cold anymore. Not sure if we need more refrigerant or the compressor is going bad or what. We already cleaned the condenser coil.

Thanks!

Put the cover back and let the fridge run for one or two days, monitoring the temperature inside.

Post your findings.

Well, it's been a few days since the fridge has been working. Seems as though it's keeping things cold. Ice is frozen, things in fridge side are cold. The day after we messed with the overload plug, the ice did melt and the fridge side was not cold but the problem seemed to fix itself. Haven't had any problems since then that we are aware of.

Guess it's working okay now, don't need to look for a problem unless there is one.

Thanks!

HELP!! It's doing it again; but it's not fixing itself! There's gotta be something that needs to be replaced to fix the thing. We just don't know where to start.

PLEASE

I would recommend to replace the overload and the start relay (part number AP3108472) as you did it earlier.

If it would not help then the compressor is bad and has to be replaced. This job must be done by a certified technician and is very expensive.
