I took out the drum to get at the ("t-stat safe" part# AP2619437 -
it checked open. !) (The high limit tested closed.) Neither was grounded or smelled burned. The motor was not grounded and show 0 "ohms" between the leads.

What the heck happened. to make this dryer just quit and smell burned ?........

P.S. ( The breaker box is OK ) it didn't blow the breaker.

First off I'm not a tech. Perhaps... Heater element overheated, causing safety fuse to burn out (go open). If that happened, maybe because of a restriction in the ducting limiting airflow, or, bad high limit t-stat.
