Washer stalls out when going into spin cycle. It sounds like it's grinding and trying to go, but then just stops and puts off a burning smell. If you leave it alone and let it cool off, then reset it into aggitation again, it will sometimes go into the spin cycle ok.

I'm thinking it's the motor, but the motor is a $200 gamble. Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

I don’t think it is the motor being that it starts fine during wash. These are the things I would check.

Make sure the belt isn’t worn out to the point that it can’t a good grip. Note if the belt is bad one of these other thing may have caused it.

Make sure the pump is free to turn both ways. Often the pump will get hard to turn causing this problem.

Make sure the motor is free to move back and forth, free float so to speak.

Remove the belt and see if the big transmission pulley will turn freely both ways. The agitator should turn when you turn it one way and the entire spin basket should turn the other.

It is possible there is something under the spin basket causing the tub to be hard to turn. I would check all other possible causes first. Clothes Washer Repair Guide

Applianceman - Thank you for your response to my post. I went through the steps you outlined, and then installed a new belt. The washer works fine now. The old belt was not cracking like I'm used to seeing with Arizona damaged belts, but it was worn smooth.

I really appreciate your input.

Merry Christmas!
