Replacing the compressor involves breaking into the sealed refrigerant system, and a fairly involved process of refrigerant removal, evacuation of air and other non-compressable elements, then recharging the system after the new compressor is installed. Many shops do not do this in-home. Check with several repair companies in your area before committing to this expense. Most of us will do a thorough diagnosis for a nominal trip charge (service call fee).
