I have had my Kenmore top-load washer for 2.5 years. In the past week, it has suddenly started to make a very loud sound like gears are stripping. When I first noticed it, it only lasted for a second and happened when it switched from washing to the spinning cycle. I thought it was just a fluke when it first happened, but last night when I used it again the sound would not stop. I had to turn everything off and drain the washer by hand. Any suggestions on how to fix? Sears wants $130 for labor plus the cost of any replacement parts.

Will the washer spin/agitate when its making that noise and would it drain on its own while making the noise?

No, the washer will not spin or drain while making the noise.

I think you probably have a bad motor coupler. it is a plastic/rubber piece that connects the motor to the transmission. you will have to pull the motor away from the transmission to check the coupler but if that is what the problem is which is likely then it is a fairly cheap part and i am confident you can repair that yourself

Was thanked: 2 time(s) in 2 post(s)
If the washer motor will run in spin but not drain, you probably have a clogged pump
