GE dryer was squeaking VERY loudly for a while, then the other day I heard it give a loud thunk and the drum quit rotating. The drum won't rotate even by hand, but the heat still works. Can you tell me in what order we should look at suspect parts? Thank you.

Sounds like the drum jammed for some reason and the belt snapped.

Open it up and take a look.
Be sure to unplug the unit when doing this.
The following should help.

We figured out the Thunk was caused by the spindle in the rear bearing breaking (post was broken and there were metal shavings). Not sure if fixing it will fix the squeak..... Thank you.

Odds are high that it will fix the racket.
I did not know this was a center support type dryer as there was no model number.
Be sure to re-grease the ball with hi temp grease when re-installing.
I would also check the belt, front glides idler wheel and drum seal etc., might as well also replace those if need be while you have it opened up.

I would clean the interior especially the motor and the blower wheel.

Also is a good time to clean/check your vent system

Basically an overhaul.
