The furnace intermittently bangs during ignition as if to much gas is building up. Could this be the igniter is not getting hot quickly enough and a new igniter is needed?

Sounds to me like the burners need inspection. Either you have a big hole or plugged holes in the burners from rust; causing pooling up of combustables.
Remove the tubes and brush them, Get the rust out and inspect for holes and busted seams.
