We purchased this freezer used. It appeared to work fine. We brought it home, added food and plug it in. It froze some items, but other would not freeze. The bread in the top rack does not freeze.
I took off the side panel to see if there was anything obvious wrong. I fiddled around with the setting dial and closed the panel. I plugged the freezer back in and it started to freeze everything fine. I had the setting on max (7) and figured that I could turn it down a little (to 5). After tuning the dial down, it stopped freezing again. So I turned it back to max and it continued to not freeze everything.

Could you please help diagnose the problem?

You have to see if the compressor is running. It should be warm and you should feel it vibrating.

If it is running then it could be that the unit is low on freon or the compressor is toast. Either problem is an expensive fix.

If it is not running then it could be your thermostat is toast.
This is what it sounds like to me as it did run when you changed the temperature.

You could try unplugging the unit, removing the 2 wires from the thermostsat, short them together, tape them up to ensure they cannot short to the frame. Plug the unit in and give it a try. If the compressor starts and cools properly, the thermostat needs replacing.

If the compressor does not start with the thermostat jumped then it could be the compressor start relay (PTC). Check it, be sure to check that the compressor windings are OK.

I jumped the themostat and let it run over night. It worked! So it looks like the thermostat. Thank you for the help!
