Rank: Member Groups: Registered Joined: 11/18/2009(UTC) Posts: 2		My Amana side by side started defrosting all the way in the freezer. Ice, etc. would melt. Then in a couple of days it would start freezing/cooling properly. Then it didn't cool at all. I left it off for a few days plugged it in and ran it for a while. After 45 minutes the freezer got down to 25, half hour later, back up to 45. I took the back off of the freezer compartment exposing the evaporator and fan section. The fan was working and the coils where frosting up for the little while it worked. The compressor fan in the back of the unit is also working ok. Could this be a defrost thermostat problem? The only way to ohm that out properly is for it to be below the closing temperature, right? So, if I can put the thermostat in another freezer and leave it there for a little bit I shuld be able to ohm it out. I would be grateful for any help. Semper Fi.

Note they have to be heavily iced/frosted up to cause a problem. If it was a defrost problem it is odd that it would clear itself unless something in the circuit has gone intermittent. When the unit went up to 45, was the compressor running? If not it could be you were in a defrost cycle. When you checked the coils for frost was it just in one area especially where the freon enters the coils? If yes then you may be low on freon. You have to check that the compressor is running, then let it run for an hour or so and then check the coils. They should have a fairly even coat of frost.
