The dryer will heat when the timer is put on a cycle, but it won't run. The push to start switch has continuity only when it is pushed in, but even if you keep the switch pushed in the motor doesn't run the element just heats until the whole dryer is hot. The push to start switch doesn't click when you push it in so I'm pretty sure it's bad, but when nothing would run even if I held the switch in so that it had continuity I wondered if something else could also be wrong. The door switch seems to be OK. Any ideas what else might be wrong or could it all be in the push to start switch?

The first thing I would check is the heating element (#17 on the bulkhead parts break down diagram) being shorted to ground and the thermal fuse (#7 on the bulkhead parts break down diagram) for continuity.

- The part number for the heating element is AP3094254

- The part number for the thermal fuse is AP3132867

Here are the break down diagrams for the Whirlpool dryer Model LEC8858EZ1

Thanks Gene. I got out the voltmeter and started checking. The thermal fuse has continuity, but I only have 120 volts across the heater. I have 120v from both legs of the line in to neutral and 240v across them. I have 120 volts on the thermal fuse side of the heater, but 0volts on the other side ( the line that goes to the motor. I do have 120v on the side of the motor that comes directly from the line in, but I have 0 volts on the side that comes through the heater element. I'm guessing that means the element is bad and I just need to replace it. Anything else I need to check?

Did you check the heating element for continuity to ground?

Looks like the thermal fuse has to be replaced and it's very important to check the heating element.

Ok Gene I hope this is the last time I have to bother you. I checked the heating element and there is continuity to ground ,I also checked the thermal fuse (part # 7 on the bulkhead diagram) and there is NO continuity soooo if I understand correctly that means I need to replace the thermal fuse, do I also need to replace the heating element? Thanks in advance for your help and patience. I appreciate your taking time to help others like this. BC

You have to replace both parts: the heating element and the thermal fuse.
