My garage refrigerator recently stopped cooling. It’s a 1985 Kenmore 18 top freezer bottom refrigerator. Fans internally work, but it’s blowing warm air. After troubleshooting, I think I found the problem. The thermal overload protector smelled burned. I removed it and tried to find a replacement on the Internet. I don’t understand the markings but I do know it is a Klixon brand. The only markings on it are: MRA2785-165 and 176002. Unable to find an exact match, I tried to match up the part visibly based on what looked similar and purchased one on Amazon and put it in the fridge. It fried when I plugged the fridge back in. The replacement overload protector was more than likely the wrong resistance and it was not the same manufacturer, the replacement was an Othmro brand 1/5hp 150w resistor. I don’t know how to post a picture here or I would post several. The only info on the back of the compressor is: L2801-1A Pn2715 115v 60hz PH 100v 50hz PH 2.6 FLA-23.5 LRA
R12 1623-3225
So, the questions I have are, 1. What am I missing as far as troubleshooting? 2. What is a viable replacement part for the spent Klixon resistor? 3. Is the fridge salvageable based on what limited info I’ve shared?
