Whirlpool dryer---need to hold start button several seconds

I have a Whirlpool Gold Senseon GGW9878JQ1 gas dryer, ~ 15 years old. If I press the start button as I normally would, the dryer will briefly start and immediately stop after I release the button. However, if I hold the button for several seconds, the dryer will start and then continue normally through the whole drying cycle, as though it finally got the message. Is this likely a problem with the start button itself, which seems easy to replace, or something downstream?
