Hey all.
I've scoured the forum for about an hour and a half and can't find exactly the same issue. If there's a thread already about this, I'd appreciate getting pointed in the right direction.

I've got a Maytag Performa Top loader washer unit. It's belt driven. I have no idea what the model number is (as the sticker is long gone) but my guess is it's 10 years old.
Yesterday I was down in the garage where it's located and heard it start to spin up. The motor was making a buzzing sound and after about 5 seconds of spinning stopped entirely.
I pulled the front cover off and watched as it tried a few more times. Each time it would begin to spin the drum and give up after about 5 seconds and then try again after about 5 minutes. the motor also got hot to the touch and smelled a bit of burning.

Belt looked good.

I pulled the pulley off the bottom of the drum and saw that the pulley was cracked where it should wrap around the little plastic cam piece. and the thrust bearing was in pieces. So I picked up a new kit and installed it. Still having the same issue. All 3 pulleys seem to move fine when spun by hand (but I'm not sure how much drag the drum should have on it). When the motor kicks in to try and spin up the drum, I can spin the drum by hand from the top of the agitator. When the motor gives up, the brake locks up the drum. I feel like either the drum is dragging too hard and the motor is fused to stop trying before it burns up, or the motor doesn't have enough power in the first place and gives up for the same reason.

Can someone help me troubleshoot here?

Thanks so much,
Bob

Just an update...in case it helps.

The washer made it through a full cycle today. Then gave out on the second trial run.
The one thing I noticed that was very different between it working and not was that , when it worked, the sound of water being pushed out of the drain pipe happens immediately upon the motor kicking on, whereas when the motor is going to try and give up, no water is heard flowing through the drain pipe.
Watching the belt from underneath, all 3 pulleys (Motor, Water Pump, Tub) are spinning before the motor gives up. The tub is spinning as well, but doesn't gain much speed by the time the motor quits.

_Thanks for the collective brain power here.

Further update:
I believe it to be agitating fine.
I can also spin the transmission pulley CCW and release the brake on the drum and spin the drum in either direction freely.
