The icemaker in out Kenmore Elite has 2 related problems. 1) Ice in it freezes into a solid lump after about 24 hours. The ice cubes are the right shape & size, the icemaker stop making ice when the bin is full etc. The freezer is at the right temperature but this looks like the ice is defrosting and then refreezing causing it to set solid. 2) The dispense doesn't work. It makes whirring sounds like a motor is running then it sounds like too much ice or a solid chunk drops into it and it stops running. We have to get ice by opening the freezer door. There is no water dripping from the ice dispenser so if it is defrosting, it is doing it only very slightly. This has been happoening for about 3 months and it is consistent - the ice bin always freezes up and I have to pull it out and empty it. The freezer temperature display shows that the freezer is at the right temperature.
My short-term solution has been to turn the ice maker off when we have enough ice for the next couple of days so it's more of an inconvenience than a disaster. But I guess the big question is "How do I stop my ice bin setting in a solid lump?"
