Hello and good afternoon. I have a Whirlpool Refrigerator/Freezer (Model WRX988SIBM03) and it’s only 3-4 years old. A few weeks ago we started having issues with our ice maker as it was leaking. I opened the compartment and found water in the ice box. I turned the ice maker off, cleaned everything up, and waited a day before putting it back in normal operation. After a few days or a week it started happening again. We did this a total of 3 times. During the last time I noticed the freezer wasn’t keeping items very cold. When I told my wife we needed to call a repair company she said she noticed the fridge was having a similar issue. So now it seems like it’s the entire fridge/freezer. We then noticed it was really happening- the fridge and freezer were getting very warm and we had to throw out some food.

We called a repair company but due to the virus they said they wouldn’t be able to come out for 3-4 weeks. I figure I got nothing to lose to look into it and I know that our model has diagnostics built in. I went thru the guide and picked out the tests I wanted to run, which was almost all of them. From what I could tell all the tests passed. I was somewhat confused so I ran all the tests a second time and again they all passed. I noticed the compressor and fan appeared to be working properly so I put a cup of water in the fridge and a container of water in the freezer. Sure enough, come morning time the fridge was ice cold, the freezer container was solid ice, and the ice maker was not leaking. So it appeared to be working correctly.

For today I decided I wanted to at least pull of the front and back covers to ensure things were working correctly. There was dust on the coils but it wasn’t what I would consider a crazy amount. I cleaned everything off and decided to run the tests again, a third time. And again, everything worked and seemed to pass correctly. The compressor was running and getting warm/hot and the fan was running, so I put everything back together. Can someone please explain what I’m missing here. I will be extremely happy if we do not have anymore problems with this appliance...but we also do not want to put everything back in the fridge/freezer to have it start failing again. Are there any recommendations I should try? Should I try getting with a different repair company that might be able to come out sooner? Thanks in advance for the help!
