Kenmore Elite Direct Drive Washer Noisy at start of spin cycle

Washer has relatively new motor, coupler, pump, transmission, and clutch. All seem to be working fine.
Recently started making screeching sound at start of spin cycle which stops as basket comes up to speed.
At full speed spin the washer sounds normal - no unusual noise or vibration.
Found lots of unusual fine dirt/dust under washer.
I suspected this could be brakes not releasing completely. Disassembled and determined that clutch spring was not correct. Replaced clutch lining and correct (stiffer) spring. Cam lever also seemed a little worn and so this was also replaced. Manual operation of brake cam seems normal.
Reassembled and there is some improvement but the noise is still there although a little quieter.
Am i correct in believing that the problem is in the brakes?
The only thing I can imagine is that the brake rollers are worn and so the cam isn't able to cleanly release them and some initial dragging occurs causing the noise.
The lack of vibration suggests that it isn't a bearing or drive block.
If it is the brakes, should i replace them or the whole basket drive?
Thanks!
