Hello,

I have an old whirlpool automatic fridge, freezer top fridge bottom. It's about 35+ years old. Model number is useless ETT12DWL1.

It has a thermostat, compressor and coils - NO fan - nothing else.

Thermostat is in the wall of the fridge

After defrosting it, a few days later after turning it back on it had slight noise from compressor. A few days later Fridge was hot and not running. Figured it was the compressor or thermostat. So I got a new supco RCO410 to do process of elimination.

Didn't work so I tested the thermostat and thermostat no does not close the circuit / send power to supco 3 in 1 to turn on the compressor. So I then connected 120 volt wall outlet power directly to the supco and connected all 3 wires, R,W,B to the compressor.

Now the compressor turns on with slight buzz and runs for about a minute or two then shuts off. It gets too hot to touch. The temp in freezer is about 25 degrees and fridge is just above 40, so the compressor is circulating the Freon.

So with no thermostat connected and when power is direct and on to the 3 in 1 supco it turns on the compressor till it gets hot then the thermal protection in the compressor turns it off till it cools for 4 or 5 minutes then compressor turns on again till it gets hot within 2 minutes then turns off. Repeats this as long as it's plugged in.

No ice or frost on ant tubes the freon runs through so I don't think there is any clog.

Wondering if the compressor is bad or is this due to bypassing the thermostat?
