Should the upper part of the agitator pull out, Maytag.

We have a Maytag washer model, LAV3600AWW. The upper part of the agitator has become loose and pops up during the washing cycle. My thought was that this part is meant to come off because if it did you would have more space to wash large blankets. Reading the manual nothing was said of this "feature". I was able to take the part that popped up apart and I think I can put everything back together and fix it so that it does not come off during the wash cycle. Question, is this part ment to come off when washing large blankets?
Thanks for any help.
