The above model washer may need a transmission repaired or replaced. Is it possible or practical to repair the transmission rather than replace it ? Are special tools required ? What kind of lube is needed to refill it ?

Replacing the whole transmission is your best option. Special tools are required to change. Will also need a new seal kit. First check your warranty, some SQ transmissions are warranted 7 years or more.
