Whirlpool Duet F/L drains water during wash cycle

Just got this washer ... never had a front loader before so learning differences. I know this HE washer uses less water than old F/L models but am wondering if there is too little water. I notice once the wash cycle starts I can hear some of the water being drained out. I don't know if this is normal or not... and if not, how I might go about fixing it. I prefer DIY as opposed to paying someone $100 to come out and tell me what's wrong and how much it would cost to fix.
Any guidance on how to operate this washer for best results is appreciated. I notice that on the default Normal/Casual cycle clothes don't get really clean compared to my old Whirlpool Estate model top loader. I also noticed that the wash portion of the 59 minute cycle only seems to last 6 minutes.. could this be right?
