We have been having problems with the temperature in our 5yo Samsung refrigerator fluctuating and being too high. Based on Internet research, all signs pointed to freezing over or other issue with the evaporator fan, so I took the back lower panel off to see what I could find. There was indeed a large block of ice there.

Unfortunately, the ice had frozen onto the styrofoam frame that sits between the back of the fridge (around the evaporator coil) and the exposed panel. When I removed the panel, I broke off a piece of the stryofoam frame. The pictures show the frame put back together, and the broken chunk.

My question is, do I need to buy a whole new panel assembly ($125)? Or can I get away with a bit of glue to solidify the frame and put everything back together?

Finally, there is was some kind of black goop (3rd picture) mixed in with the ice that was on the back of the fridge above the evaporator coil. It has a rubbery consistency like some kind of putty... not totally rigid, but pretty solid at room temperature. It did not appear in the various videos I watched to figure out what I needed to do, and it looks almost like it dripped down from the tube above it. Should I worry about it?

Thanks for any advice you have!

Hello - I have very similar problems with samsung frig. Mine is model RF23HCEDBSR. Have had problems with ice maker for years. Technician suggested replacing ice maker DA97-13718C and auger DA97-12540K and the heat clip that located behind the central plastic panel within the frig. Did so and things were good for a few days. Lately have lots of noise from fan unit located at top of plastic panel - it’s been icing up along with the sensors. I ordered a new panel at $125. Have not had more problems as of yet so have not installed it. Tech thought the problem was moist air leaking by the panel and then icing up within. I do use a Lamborghini steamer from Amazon for thawing ice out before removing parts to do repairs. I’ve got the same black goop around the sensors that you refer to - uncertain if it is a problem. Don’t know if this helps you. Wish you best of luck. JimVG
