I have a problem with my stove top that appears to be common and I have tried the usual suggestions with no luck. It is a Kenmore 790-9644208.

The front left power burner has stopped working a long time ago. I remember there being a pop noise of some kind and I now know that is usually indicative of a simmer select board going out. At the time I didn't know that so I replaced the Surface Element Control with part #316436001. No luck.

I brought the burner to a local appliance repair shop and he tested continuity and it checked out according to him. He thinks the burner is good.

I later replaced the simmer select switch with 5303935217 thinking it would be a cheaper fix attempt then the simmer select control board (at the time I was confusing the simmer select control board with the main control board). The new switch has 5 connectors instead of just 2. But I know manufacturers sometimes substitute parts. I guessed which lead to use and as far as I can tell it is working as the simmer light does come on (I don't even remember if the light came on before or not). And again no luck with the burner.

I bought and installed a used simmer select control board #316429301. Still no luck with the burner. However i do now hear clicking noise coming from the simmer control board that sounds like it is coming on and going off so I think the board is good - or at least better than the old one.

I would still like to get this working before having to resort to a new stove. Here are my thoughts
• The Surface Element control switch is wired wrong or bad. I can't find any reference other than a wiring diagram to verify it is correct. The wiring diagram is too complicated for me to understand. I am pretty sure I connected all the wires to the new switch just like they were on the old one. I do have the original switch and could put it back in again.
  • The simmer select switch is not correct or wired wrong. Again the new one has 5 connectors instead of 2. I used a pair of connectors on the new one that appear to coordinate and as I said the simmer board is making on/off noises so I think the switch is OK.
  • The element is in fact bad
  • the used simmer control board is bad despite the noise I hear from it.
I am going to try putting the old control switch and simmer switch in again - one at at time so I will know what fixed it if it works. Beyond that I lost. Any suggestions would be great.

I don't know if anyone is reading this thread but I reinstalled the original Surface Element control switch and the original simmer select switch. There was no change in behavior except that the Element On light is now on all the time - I mean the general one off to the right, not the light specific to any one burner.

I did notice that when I test the other burners I can hear a low hum that comes on immediately. I do not hear that when I test the front right burner that I am trying to repair.

Again I would love any suggestions that anyone has.
