Drive shaft "Slinger Gasket" no longer available?

I'm ordering a new seal kit to repair the leak from this older GE/ Fridgidare/ Whatever brand clothes washer. (That seal kit below the "trunnion". )
At the very bottom of the outer tub I have a damaged felt-like gasket that I see parts diagrams call a "slinger", apparently installed on the drive shaft as a last resort for tub leaks past the main gaskets.
This part is no longer available. Can I skip making one or is it essential.
