My Whirlpool dryer will run and heat for 20 minutes and stop running. If I wait 15 to 20 minutes it will start back up and run another 20 minutes and stop again. If I wait another 20 minutes it will start back up and finish the load. I checked the vent for blockage and looks good, plenty of airflow as well. I check the Hi T-Stat for continuity right after it stops and it appears to be closed or have zero resistance. The internal bias T-Stat also shows continuity. What switch will stop the motor from running until it cools down???? I haven't seen the wire diagram yet but I haven't opened the top panel so it might be there. Is there a wire diagram for this model on line somewhere?

It sounds like the motor bearings are getting tight and overheating the motor. It has to cool down to restart. Run the dryer till it quits, then pull the power to it and see how hot the motor is.

There is a good video on this page.

Thanks for the reply ThatGuy,
Is this a common problem? The unit isn't very old and the motor sounds fine right up to when it stops. When I pull the clothes out after they have gone through 2 or three of these cycles they are very hot. I feel like everything is getting to a heat trip point that shuts the dryer down. I can see the heat coil cycle and it (the coil) turns completely off about 10 seconds before the motor stops.

If its really hot in the dryer, this could cause the motor to overheat. There is a overheat thermal switch on the motor to protect it. If the motor gets too hot or pulls to many amps it will shutdown the motor.

The question is why is it so hot in there?

Have you checked and cleaned all of you vent out? Never use flexible plastic vent on a dryer. Its very dangerous.
