While on vacation, my friend came in to water plants. She noticed a terrible odor in the house. Although lights were on in both sides, freezer had completely thawed and fridge was warm. I'd like to repair it myself. What dhould I check first? Defrost timer? Defrost thermostat? HELP

First thing to do is pull it out away from the wall and unplug it. Remove the cover from the control board and squeeze the 4 tabs holding it in place to remove it. You may have to disconnect a couple of the wires to get it out enough to look at the back side of it. You will likely see a small burn mark on the back side of the board. If you do, replace the board. If you do not, pull the machine compartment cover and see if the compressor is hot, then repost.

Removed mother board. Large black spot on metal behind board, small black spot on board. Parts are ordered. CS said if the boasrd doesnt fix the problem, I may need to replace other parts. Any idea what those may be? thanks. Your post certainly helped in researching problem Thanks!
