Last night I replaced my evaporator fan motor (thanks for all the help). When I removed the evaporator cover, I noticed that the bottom left side was expanded, plastic cracked, and some sort of foam charred. Has anyone ever seen this before in a GE Bottom-Freezer model? I bought the house 5 years after the previous owner had this unit installed so I'm not sure if that foam is factory or from previous service. It's now been 3 years since purchase and I haven't noticed any leaks or burning smell. Should I be concerned?

I've seen that happen before, but not usually that bad. Make sure the defrost heater isn't touching the front panel or anything. Make sure it's in it's holders like it belongs and that the pan under the evaporator is properly positioned. It wouldn't hurt to put your defrost t-stat in an ice bath and make sure it opens. It could be staying on too long.

Ugh, my ranking of things I'd really rather not do: 1) Take out my baskets, shelves, door, icemaker, covers, panel 2) See #1 3) Repeat That said, thanks for the tip, CBM. The pan is definitely positioned correctly, freezer temps have always seemed fine, and no frost issues. Perhaps I'll embark on the teardown again soon to check the heater position. They should really make these things more easily accessible from the back instead of deconstructing the entire freezer every time there is an issue.

Preaching to the choir! There are some far worse than this one.
