We have a Maytag Gemini MER6871AAQ electric stove with double ovens.

My wife says the top element in the lower (main) oven does not get red and some things don't brown right.

During baking the top element does heat and when broiling it gets red and things definitely brown and can get burned😉

Should the top element get red during baking?

I have read that for most ovens the lower element either does all the heating (without the top being active) or does 90 percent of the heating and the upper element only partially heats to provide more even heating. Is this true for this model.

How can we determine if the top element is functioning as it should when baking?

The bottom element should be much hotter than the top element. Tell your wife to use each element for different purposes. We usually put the veggies on the top element.
