the washer stopped after the wash cycle and was still full of water. The timer would not advance. I was able to advance the timer manually to the rinse cycle and it completed the cycle. The timer made a buzzing noise. I ordered a timer, but went back to troubleshoot, I ran the washer while empty. The machine again stopped after the wash cycle, but when I applied pressure to the lid, it ran properly.

I vote lid switch! These are notorious for splitting in half. Try to repair (quick fix) remove the lid switch, then get a couple of good strong zip ties and place around body of switch. Be careful not to zip tie any moving parts. Cinch the zip ties tight make sure the bud part is toward the bottom of the switch so as not to hamper re-installation. This should make it last a little longer. Or if you like you can purchase a new one right here. Whirlpool 3949247V Washer Lid Switch - AppliancePartsPros.com
