Unit frosted over. Water in fresh food compartment. Checked the timer, which turned out fine. But no heating in defrost mode. Thawed everything out. Drain line was plugged, but cleared it. So I checked the defrost thermostat which looked exploded, so I ordered a new one. Got it this evening. So here's my question;
In order to check the heater, I was going to replace the thermostat and then put the unit in defrost mode hoping to see the coil heat up. But if the freezer is not cold yet, will the thermostat operate?
Or will I have to wait until the fridge gets cold for it to operate properly??

*Update*
Got impatient. Popped for a digital multi-meter and tested the heater. It was perfect.
Defrost thermostat was the only problem....other than a clogged condensate drain line.
Unit is running like NEW again.
APP parts were delivered to my door in LESS THAN 24 hours!!! That was with "cheapest" STANDARD shipping option. AWESOME SERVICE!!!
