My GE refrigerator is forming frosty ice on the back of the inside rear of the freezer. It no longer reaches freezing temperatures and the refrigerator is not cold enough. I am storing things like milk in the freezer to prolong shelf life. When I worked in an appliance store way back in the late sixties, I remember a similar thing that was fixed by changing out an auto defroster. But I didn't perform the work, I only assisted.

I can guarantee that if you were to take off the plastic cover at the back of your freezer, your evaporator coil would be totally covered in ice. There can be 2 issues, your defrost heater is not coming on (bad defrost heater or bad defrost sensor/thermostat) or the drain plug under the evaporator coil is blocked. Evaporator coils which are frozen over would prevent air flow causing the freezer and fridge temps to warm up. Take some pictures if you can.
