My 12 year old Frigidaire laundry center was working fine until the other day while drying a load of laundry I could smell burnt rubber. The same smell a vacuum cleaner gives off when the brush gets caught and the belt burns. I removed the clothes and ran it empty for about 5 minutes. Although you could only get the burnt rubber smell inside the drum it still was there. My husband took off several panels and vacuumed and removed all the dust and dirt. He checked the drive belt which was fine. I ran it empty for about 15 minutes and when I opened the door there was a faint smell of the burning rubber. My husband does not feel comfortable removing the barrel. I did was a small bathroom carpet with the rubber backing and stupidly put it in the dryer. When I opened the dryer - there were bits of rubber everywhere. I vacuumed the inside of the dryer the best I could. Any advice on anything else I might be able to do? The washer works fine. The dryer works with the exception of the light odor. I am afraid of it possibly starting a fire. But really would not have to replace it.
