When I press the start button the dryer will turn on, but when it is released it turn off. If I hold down the button the drum will turn and the burner will kick on and will stop when I let it go. Any suggestions on what I should check?

This repair can actually be a little tricky. Sometimes (rarely) you can get away with a bad push to start switch. More commonly i find in the GE's it is a bad centrifugal switch in the motor. to test it of course your going to need a schematic or wiring diagram. occasionally you can see the spring loaded switch broken apart and pieces laying in the bottom of the dryer. good luck
