I have a situation that I am not proud of because I should have called a professional to start with and I would not be in this position. With that please hold judgement of my intelligence :).
So I have a fairly new fridge that was given to us because someone was moving and it is pretty nice so we decided to replace our garage fridge with this one. So keep in mind this is a garage fridge.
It is a french door on top, freezer on bottom model with an icemaker unit in the top fridge part to feed the door with ice. The icemaker did not work and apparently has had been a problem for years. The icemaker definately took up valuable space. Here is where the problem begins :(.
I thought I would easily just remove the icemaker to reclaim the space, afterall it is in the garage, we did not care about the ice. So I proceeded to be as careful as I could but I got a little impatience and there was a soft copper line in the back that I could not see...well and it fractured. I never though there would be refrigerant line to the icemaker...I thought at worse it would be water which is no big deal.
In any case, I finished removing the icemaker but now having compromised the sealed system. I know, dumb but a total accident.
So, I am left with a decision....is this worth fixing? The line is sitting right there, easily accessible to close up, remove the air and then recharge it with refrigerant. It would cost me between $100-200 just to find out what it would cost to close it up and recharge it. I have no idea what refrigerant even costs these days, how long it would take to evacuate and prepare the system. I do know that the technician would not have to find a leak so that part is easy....it is right there front and center and accessible.
So does anyone know if this is worth even having a repairman come and take care of? I would say if it goes past 300 it is probably not worth it and could just pick up a decent fridge on Craigslist.
Thoughts?
