Greetings All,
I have a GE washer that first burnt out a fusable link. After replacing it, and resetting washer with lid close method, I received a 6 flash error code which the book says is "locked rotor". The washer will fill and drain, and run through the timer to the end, but will not agitate or spin. I can spin the motor and big pulley wheel by hand, but when it goes to wash cycle the motor "studders" as in it only moves back and forth maybe 1/4" or so very rapidly. Also, there was a small amount of smoke that appeared to come from the circuit board area and then it sets off the 6 flash error code again. Would this mean that the motor is bad, or can something else be checked and replaced? Thanks in advance for the help!

These mode shifter models are awful to diagnose. The stupid blinking light is usually not helpful. Here is what we can say

6 flashes – This means that the motor cannot turn. Clear the code and if the problem still exists follow these instructions. To check, this first remove the belt and attempt to turn the big pulley. If it turns freely both ways replace the motor. If the big pulley, is stuck the shifter needs to be replaced.

If you decide to do the repair and buy these outrageously expensive parts from this site (GE's fault, not APP's) you can return them if they don't fix things.

Thanks for the quick reply sidfink. I can turn the big pulley both ways, but the metal bowl the clothes sit in turns also? Is this considered "free" and normal, or should nothing but the big pulley turn? I can turn the motor freely by hand both ways also. Neither one feels like they are binding or grinding when turned.
Thanks again!

This sounds like the motor, but there is still the potential problem of the board. You can try replacing the motor and if that does not fix things and you bought it from this site you can return it. But if you think both the board and motor are bad you should really think about the replacing the machine with a basic no frills, no electronics top loader.
